I am going to be posting tips about blogging, my learnings as I build my blog and outcomes. Today, I will share about my first month blogging experience. This post will include how much traffic to expect in first month, how to get your website indexed by Google, and how to get Social traffic on your blog.
How much traffic to expect in first month of blog?
First 5-6 months of blogging are difficult. You would be posting a lot but still wouldn’t notice a lot of traffic on your blog. But think about it, if you open a new shop would a lot of people come to it if they don’t know about it? Hence, marketing your content is as important as the content itself.
This is because it takes a few months to start appearing in Google search results. Of course, if you directly type in the name of your website you may start appearing as soon as 4 days after submitting your sitemap. But I am talking about appearing in keyword based search.
Hence, unless you have a huge budget to promote the website, you should not expect more than 600-800 unique visitors in the first month. Any traffic in the first month between that number without any paid search or promotions is actually good.
See my daily visitor fluctuation below:
You would notice the peaks and troughs. Peaks happened when I wrote a few posts and started promoting on Social media. Troughs were days when I was too busy to promote on Social. Also, almost all of the social media traffic was from Facebook.
How to get your website indexed by Google?
Best way is to sign up into Google Search Console and submit your website. If you want a specific URL to be indexed, go to Google Search Console then on left side go to URL inspection and search for the URL. If it is not indexed then on the right hand side screen you would notice a button that says “Request indexing”. Click it.
Additionally, it is a good idea to generate a sitemap of your blog and submit in Google Search Console in the Sitemap section. If you are on wordpress there are multiple plugins to generate sitemap. I use Yoast SEO which does more than just generating Sitemaps. It also helps me with website SEO.
How to get Social traffic on your blog?
While Social traffic is not necessarily the best traffic, it is a useful source of initial traffic. Ideally, you would want people to search for keywords and land on relevant pages on your blog. However, in the initial days Social traffic is a good source to build traffic.
The reason I say social traffic might not be the best type of traffic is because it might not be relevant. Depending on where you have posted your blog URL, people who would be clicking it might not be interested in it. As you can see below, the difference in bounce rate of Social traffic vs search traffic is huge.
But social traffic in the initial days is important to get visitors on your website. Below are the key things you can do to get relevant social traffic:
- Join relevant Facebook groups – If your blog is about travel, you should join travel groups on Facebook. Here, you can post relevant articles about travel which people might be interested in. But don’t spam. You should not post more than 1 article in 2-3 days.
- Create your Facebook page – This is a long term strategy. In the initial days it might not get you a lot of clicks but is important to build followers. Considering the followers of your page are more likely to like the articles you post, they would be good traffic and brand ambassadors to your website.
- Create an Instagram business account – While you cannot put URLs in Instagram posts, here is what you can do. Put a link to your blog in your bio. Always tag yourself in every Instagram post, so that people can reach your bio. You should link your Facebook page with your Instagram account. By doing this, you can share all Instagram posts on your Facebook page as well.
Those were some tips and learnings from my first week of blogging, along with how much traffic to expect in first month of blogging. I shall be writing about this topic more in the coming days.
