To be honest, the movie was pathetic but the shooting location of Gerua song left us mesmerised by the beauty of Iceland. So much so, that we visited Iceland a couple of months later. If you are interested, you can have a look at our itinerary and our suggested itinerary here. In this post, we shall be talking about some of the key shooting locations of Gerua song from Dilwale movie.
1. The abandoned plane – Iceland
This is the opening shot of the song, where Shahrukh is on top of an abandoned plane. This place is Sólheimasandur in south Iceland.
The airplane is named C-47 SkyTrain and belonged to the US military. It was forced to land on November 24, 1973 on Sólheimasandur’s black sandy beach in the south of Iceland. The place is also called Black beach. Just a trivia, all the passengers of the plane came out safe post the crash landing.
Directions to find the abandoned plane wreck in Iceland
Earlier, people could drive all the way up to the plane but now it is forbidden. To reach there, pass the magnificent Skógafoss waterfall and drive a little further. After passing a river called Jökulsá you are almost there. There is no sign on the road to point out where to turn and the plane cannot be seen from the road. However, there is a newly made parking lot on the side of the road. The plane is around 2 hour walk from here. Here are the GPS coordinates for Google Maps.
2. Skógafoss waterfall in south Iceland
There are two waterfalls in the song. First one is Skogafoss, which you see in the scene above that has a beautiful rainbow formation at the waterfall. Don’t presume that this is VFX, this is very much real. In fact, we saw similar scenes at many waterfalls where rainbow surrounded the waterfall.
Following are the GPS coordinates for Google Maps of Skogafoss.
3. Reynisdrangar rocks
Another iconic Iceland location in the song is Reynisdrangar rocks. These are natural rock formations situated near the shore of Reynisfjara beach by the coastal village Vík, south of Iceland. Apart from being a shooting location for Gerua, these were also used as a shooting location for Season 7 of Game of Thrones, at Eastwatch by the Sea.
Following are the GPS coordinates for Google Maps of Reynisdrangar rocks.
Also, the rocks are at Reynisfjara black sands, which is also a shooting location for the song Gerua from the movie, Dilwale.
4. Seljalandsfoss waterfall
This is the curtain waterfall. Yes, you can actually walk behind this waterfall and capture yourself in the same pose. :).
Following are the GPS coordinates for Google Maps of Seljalandsfoss.
5. Stokksnes – Yes you can walk on water too
This is not VFX guys. Stokksnes in Vatnajokull national park is the place where you can walk on water. It is also known as Vestrahorn.
Stokksnes is fairly easy to find. All you need to do is, follow the main road A1. A few kilometers from Höfn, make a right turn into a gravel road. There’s a sign board for the location, just before the tunnel. After taking the turn you simply follow the gravel road until you get to an area with a small cafeteria.
You will have to pay a small fee to enter the area and you either park the car by the cafeteria or drive it further into the area. But be aware of sand on the road, especially if it’s a windy day.
Following are the GPS coordinates for Google maps of Stokksnes.
6. Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
This one is my personal favourite location. And probably among the best shooting locations of Gerua song, Dilwale. You might not be allowed to stand on top of the floating glaciers unlike Kajol and Shahrukh, but the beauty of this place is breathtaking. In fact, you could just sit here for hours looking at the clear blue floating glaciers. And yes, this is no VFX, in fact if anything the song is not able to capture even half the amazing colour of the ice here.
Following are the GPS coordinates for Google maps of Jokulsarlon.
And those were all of the key shooting locations of Gerua song in Iceland.
